So why do I need Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)? For people 65 years of age and older, as well as for some younger individuals with disabilities, complete healthcare coverage is provided by Original Medicare, which consists of Parts A and B. Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health care are covered by Part A, which is typically premium-free and offers financial protection against the high costs of hospital stays and long-term care facilities. Part B ensures that beneficiaries have access to essential medical treatments and routine check-ups by covering outpatient care, which includes doctor visits, preventive services, diagnostic tests, and some types of medical equipment. When combined, Parts A and B provide a strong basis for handling healthcare requirements, lowering the cost of medical bills, and facilitating access to a large provider network.

Frequently Asked Questions For Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)

Original Medicare is a federal health insurance program that consists of Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It is primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, but it also covers some younger people with disabilities and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. It helps pay for hospital room, meals, general nursing, drugs as part of your inpatient treatment, and other hospital services and supplies.

Medicare Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, diagnostic tests, certain home health services, durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs and walkers), and some outpatient prescription drugs.

Individuals who are 65 years or older are eligible for Medicare. Younger people with certain disabilities or those with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant) are also eligible.

Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. Part B usually requires a monthly premium, which can vary based on income.

Original Medicare requires beneficiaries to pay deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. For Part A, there is a deductible for hospital stays and coinsurance for extended stays. For Part B, there is an annual deductible and typically 20% coinsurance for most services.

Yes, with Original Medicare, you can see any doctor or healthcare provider that accepts Medicare, and you do not need referrals to see specialists. This offers a wide range of choices and flexibility in selecting providers.

Medicare Part B covers various preventive services, including flu shots, screenings for cancer (such as mammograms and colonoscopies), cardiovascular disease screenings, diabetes screenings, and annual wellness visits, among others.

If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B when you turn 65. If you are not receiving Social Security benefits, you need to sign up for Medicare through the Social Security Administration during your Initial Enrollment Period.

Original Medicare does not cover everything. It typically does not include routine dental care, eye exams for prescription glasses, dentures, hearing aids, long-term care, or custodial care. Many beneficiaries opt for additional coverage through Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance or Medicare Advantage plans to help cover these gaps.
